How Do I Join Local 487 Mid-Atlantic Studio Mechanics?
On the first Tuesday of each month, we have a Prospective New Members Meeting. This meeting is held at 1:30 PM, at the offices of the Local. There you will be given detailed information about membership, and answers any questions that you might have. We also assess your craft experience to make sure you are applying to the right Local.

You are required to attend this meeting, as we do not always have the time to explain our membership requirements to each individual. We do ask that you call the morning of the meeting to confirm that the meeting is being held. If you live in the outlying areas of our jurisdiction, please call the office for further information.
What are the Requirements for Joining ?
Application for membership in the Alliance is made through a Local Union, such as Local 487.After attending the Prospective New Members Meeting, you will receive an application package. What Can Local 487 Offer?
Here in the Mid-Atlantic region, very few people with our skills have full-time steady jobs with one employer. If you are in the Movie / Television Industry in the Mid-Atlantic, chances are you consider yourself a free-lancer. That means every time you get hired for a job, you must re-negotiate for your wages and working conditions. The producers promise you certain specifics, but you have no recourse if they do not keep their word.

No matter how much you may freelance for one employer, they contribute nothing to a retirement plan for you, nor do anything to offset your health insurance expenses. If you feel a task is unsafe, you may have no choice other than to complete the task or quit.

Local 487 offers solutions to these and many more problems, through negotiated group contracts with production companies and related services.
